Budget Travel Tips

Everyone wants to take a vacation now and then but many people feel that they can’t afford to do so. It’s hard to budget enough money to be able to afford to take a nice trip. And most people aren’t sure how to set aside that money. But the truth is that if you plan in advance and follow some basic tips for your travels, your vacation is in reach. You don’t have to spend a fortune to go somewhere and you can set that money aside so that you have it when you really need a break.

Here are some budget travel tips to help you with those plans:
Create a vacation savings account. To get together the money that you’ll need for your trip, you should start saving right now. It’s hard to set aside money, yet. But if you make it a point to set aside a certain dollar amount every week, you’ll soon have enough to go somewhere nice. Figure out what just 5% of your paycheck is and put it in a special account that you don’t ever touch. Then it’ll be there when you’re ready to take off.
Look for flight deals and look at them carefully. You should figure out some basic travel destinations and then check regularly for deals on flights. Make sure that you read the fine print and don’t get trapped into fees.

There are often deals on last minute flights so if you can be flexible in your travel plans, you can get a good rate. Having the money set aside to go when the deals come up will help increase that flexibility.
Skip the plane. If you can’t get good flight deals, maybe you shouldn’t fly. Depending on where you’re traveling to, it may be cheaper to rent a car and drive. Alternatively, you may want to take the bus or a train to get to your destination. Most people just assume that they need to fly to travel but it’s usually a lot cheaper to get on a train.
Get the economy car. When renting a car, don’t feel like you need to get “the nice one”. All of the cars at a rental agency are in good working order and that’s all you really need. Get the economy car. If you get upgraded to a bigger car, great. If not, make do. That money saved can make your trip a lot better.
Avoid restaurants and room service. One of the biggest things that people spend money on during the travel is food. Instead, you should stop at local farmer’s markets and grocery stores or eat sit-down at inexpensive cafes that don’t have waiters who you’ll have to tip.
Find the free stuff. Sure, you want to see some of the famous attractions in the area but most cities also offer interesting free activities. Do your research in advance and ask the locals at hotels and stores when you get there so you can find out what activities, events and attractions are free.
You can afford to travel. If you budget properly and don’t spend a lot of money on your trip, you might even be able to vacation several times each year! The basic thing is to not get trapped into thinking that you have to spend money. Sure, the nicest hotel room and car would be great. But they aren’t necessary so don’t spend as though they are!
